Overview

The IPAF MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform) Operator course is designed to provide the knowledge and practical skills necessary to safely operate various types of mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs). MEWPs are commonly used for working at height in construction, maintenance, and industrial environments, and it is crucial that operators are properly trained to ensure safety and compliance with industry standards. This course combines both theoretical instruction and hands-on practical training to help operators understand the risks associated with working at height and how to mitigate those risks through safe operation and best practices.

Who Should Attend?

This course is ideal for individuals who are required to operate MEWPs as part of their job. It is suitable for:

  • Construction workers
  • Maintenance staff
  • Facility managers
  • Contractors and subcontractors
  • Anyone working in roles where the use of mobile elevated work platforms is necessary

No prior experience with MEWPs is required, although a basic understanding of workplace safety will be beneficial.

What You’ll Learn

During the course, you will cover a comprehensive range of topics, including:

  • Introduction to MEWPs: Types, functions, and applications of MEWPs.
  • Safety Regulations and Legislation: An overview of the legal requirements for operating MEWPs, including international standards (e.g., IPAF, BS, EN).
  • Risk Assessment: How to perform a risk assessment before operating a MEWP, including environmental and site-specific hazards
  • Pre-Operation Checks: The importance of daily inspections, and how to properly inspect a MEWP to ensure it is in safe working condition.
  • Safe Operation: Techniques for operating the MEWP in different environments, including manoeuvring, positioning, and controlling the platform.
  • Emergency Procedures: How to handle emergency situations, such as platform malfunctions or weather-related hazards.
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Basic knowledge of how to identify and report equipment issues.
  • Best Practices for Working at Height: Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), fall protection, and other best practices for working safely at height.

Certification & Assessment

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an IPAF MEWP Operator Certificate and an IPAF PAL Card (Powered Access License) digitally via the IPAF ePAL app which is recognized internationally as proof of the operator’s competence to safely operate MEWPs.

Assessment: The course includes both a theoretical assessment (written test) and a practical skills assessment (demonstrating competence in operating a MEWP on-site).

Validity: The IPAF ePAL Card is valid for 5 years. After this period, operators are required to renew their certification through revalidation training.

By completing this course, operators will be fully equipped to safely and effectively operate MEWPs in accordance with best practice guidelines and industry standards, helping to reduce accidents and improve workplace safety.
