Overview

The IPAF MEWP Demonstrator course is a specialist training program designed for individuals who need to demonstrate the safe operation of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) to others. This course is ideal for those in charge of training operators or guiding others in the safe use of powered access equipment on construction sites, maintenance tasks, or other work-at-height environments.

The course provides the knowledge and practical skills required to safely demonstrate MEWP use and operation to a group of users. It covers the critical safety aspects of MEWP operations, including the correct setup, safe operation, and emergency procedures, and is designed to ensure demonstrators are fully competent to educate and supervise others on site. Upon successful completion, participants will be able to demonstrate the correct procedures for operating MEWPs, enhancing the safety culture in their workplace.

Who Should Attend?

The IPAF MEWP Demonstrator course is aimed at individuals who are responsible for demonstrating the safe use of MEWPs to operators and other workers, including:

  • Site Supervisors and Managers responsible for overseeing the use of MEWPs on construction and maintenance sites
  • Health and Safety Advisors or Managers who need to educate workers on safe MEWP practices
  • Qualified IPAF MEWP Operators who are looking to extend their role to become competent in demonstrating safe use to colleagues and contractors

This course is suited for individuals with some experience in working with MEWPs, and it’s a great next step for those looking to become more involved in training and safety demonstrations.

What You’ll Learn

The IPAF MEWP Demonstrator course is structured to provide participants with the practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and communication techniques needed to safely demonstrate MEWP operation to others. Key areas covered include:

  • Introduction to MEWPs: Understanding the different types of MEWPs (e.g., scissor lifts, boom lifts) and their specific applications in various industries.
  • Legal Responsibilities and Best Practices: A review of the Work at Height Regulations (WAHR) and other legal requirements related to the use of MEWPs, including how to comply with industry standards and ensure safety.
  • Pre-Use Inspections: How to demonstrate the correct procedures for inspecting MEWPs before use, ensuring they are safe and fully functional.
  • Set-Up and Stability: How to set up the MEWP correctly, including site assessments, proper positioning, and ensuring ground conditions are suitable for safe operation.
  • Safe Operation Techniques: Demonstrating how to operate MEWPs safely, including the correct techniques for driving, elevating, and positioning the platform, and how to use fall protection systems (if applicable).
  • Emergency Procedures: How to guide others in responding to emergencies, including lowering the platform in the event of a malfunction and how to rescue a person in an emergency situation.
  • Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification: Identifying potential hazards associated with MEWP use, such as electrical hazards, overhead obstructions, and fall risks, and how to manage them effectively.
  • Effective Communication: Techniques for clearly communicating safety procedures and operational steps to other workers, ensuring that demonstrations are both informative and easily understood.
  • Practical Demonstration: Participants will practice demonstrating the safe operation of a MEWP to a group, including both theory and practical elements of safe use.

Certification & Assessment

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an IPAF MEWP Demonstrator Certificate and an IPAF PAL Card (Powered Access License) digitally via the IPAF ePAL app which is recognized internationally as proof of the individual is competent to demonstrate the safe operation of MEWPs to others in the workplace.

Assessment: The course includes both theoretical and practical assessments to ensure that participants can safely and competently demonstrate MEWP operation:
Written Theory Assessment: A short multiple-choice exam to test participants’ knowledge of MEWP safety, regulations, and operational procedures.

Practical Demonstration Assessment: Participants will demonstrate their ability to safely operate a MEWP, conduct a pre-use inspection, and deliver an effective safety demonstration to others, ensuring they can confidently instruct and supervise safe MEWP usage.

Validity: The IPAF MEWP Demonstrator certification is valid for 5 years. To maintain certification, participants must complete a revalidation or refresher course before the expiration of their certification.

The IPAF MEWP Demonstrator course provides participants with the expertise and confidence to safely demonstrate the operation of mobile elevating work platforms to others. This course is crucial for employers and trainers who want to ensure that their workforce operates MEWPs safely and effectively, reducing the risk of accidents and enhancing workplace safety.
By completing this course, you will become a qualified MEWP Demonstrator, able to teach safe practices, manage risks, and ensure compliance with industry regulations, contributing to a safer and more efficient work environment for everyone involved.
