Overview

The IPAF Hoist Demonstrator course is designed for individuals who are responsible for demonstrating and supervising the safe use of hoisting equipment on construction sites or within other work environments. This course is aimed at those who already have experience operating hoists and wish to enhance their skills in training and supervising others. Participants will learn how to effectively demonstrate the operation, safety features, and maintenance of hoists, ensuring that new or less experienced operators are adequately trained and understand safe working practices.

The IPAF Hoist Demonstrator course combines theoretical knowledge with practical demonstrations, focusing on communication skills, safety standards, and the best practices for presenting hoist operation to others. Upon successful completion, participants will be qualified to lead hoist operator training sessions on-site, reinforcing safety and compliance within their teams.

Who Should Attend?

This course is ideal for individuals who have experience operating hoists and are now in a role where they need to demonstrate or supervise hoist operation. It is suitable for:

  • Experienced hoist operators looking to take on a demonstrator or trainer role
  • Supervisors and safety officers responsible for overseeing hoist use
  • Site managers or coordinators who need to authorise or certify new operators
  • Health and safety trainers and consultants

Participants should have prior experience operating hoists, either through the completion of the IPAF Hoist Operator course or similar practical experience.

What You’ll Learn

The IPAF Hoist Demonstrator course provides comprehensive training on both hoist operation and the demonstration process, including:

  • Hoist Operation Refresher: A review of the types of hoists, their functions, and how to safely operate them. This includes material hoists, personnel hoists, and transport platforms.
  • Legal and Regulatory Overview: Understanding the legal framework surrounding hoist use, including international standards (IPAF, EU) and safety regulations.
  • Demonstration Techniques: How to effectively demonstrate the operation of a hoist, including key safety points, controls, emergency procedures, and maintenance checks.
  • Safety Awareness and Risk Management: How to identify potential hazards when using hoists and how to mitigate those risks through training and practical demonstrations. This includes safe load handling, site setup, and emergency response.
  • Effective Communication and Training Skills: Best practices for delivering clear, engaging, and informative demonstrations to trainees, ensuring they understand and adhere to safety protocols.
  • Supervising and Assessing Others: How to supervise and assess the competency of new operators, ensuring they meet safety standards and operate hoists correctly and efficiently.
  • Pre-Use Inspections and Maintenance: Emphasising the importance of routine inspections and the basics of hoist maintenance to prevent faults and ensure safe operation.
  • Emergency Procedures: Demonstrating proper emergency protocols, including evacuation, hoist malfunction handling, and dealing with unusual site conditions.

Certification & Assessment

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an IPAF Hoist Demonstrator Certificate and an IPAF PAL Card (Powered Access License) digitally via the IPAF ePAL app which is recognized internationally and indicates that the holder is qualified to demonstrate hoist operation and safety practices.

Assessment: The course includes both a theoretical and practical assessment. Participants will need to pass a written exam covering safety regulations, operational knowledge, and hoist maintenance. The practical assessment requires participants to demonstrate their ability to effectively present and supervise the operation of hoists, ensuring the trainees’ understanding of key safety procedures and operation techniques.

Validity: The IPAF ePAL Card is valid for 5 years, after which demonstrators must complete a revalidation course to maintain their certification.

By completing the IPAF Hoist Demonstrator course, participants will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to lead training sessions, supervise hoist operators, and maintain a high standard of safety on-site. This certification enhances their ability to promote a safe work environment and improve the competency of those operating hoisting equipment.
