The First Aid at Work course covers a comprehensive set of skills and knowledge to manage both minor and major medical emergencies in the workplace. Key topics include:

  • The Role of the First Aider: Understanding the responsibilities, limitations, and protocols for first aiders in the workplace, including maintaining a safe environment and preventing further injury.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS): Advanced CPR techniques for adults, including how to perform chest compressions and rescue breaths, using AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators), and managing cardiac arrest situations.
  • Control of Bleeding: Effective methods for controlling bleeding, including the use of bandages, dressings, and pressure techniques for managing severe cuts and trauma.
  • Shock Management: Identifying signs of shock and how to treat and manage shock through positioning, maintaining body temperature, and monitoring vital signs.
  • Burns and Scalds: First aid for thermal injuries, including how to treat minor and severe burns, scalds, and chemical burns.
  • Fractures, Sprains, and Strains: How to assess and manage bone fractures, joint injuries, and musculoskeletal injuries, including the use of splints and immobilisation techniques.
  • Head and Spinal Injuries: Recognising and providing first aid for head, neck, and back injuries, including how to stabilize the casualty and prevent further harm.
  • Seizures: How to manage a person experiencing a seizure, including ensuring safety and providing post-seizure care.
  • Medical Conditions: First aid for conditions such as diabetes, asthma attacks, anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions), and strokes.
  • Emergency Evacuation: Basic knowledge of safe evacuation procedures and how to move casualties if necessary.

Certification & Assessment

Upon successful completion of the First Aid at Work course, participants will receive:

  • First Aid at Work Certificate: This certificate is valid for 3 years and demonstrates that the individual is trained to provide comprehensive first aid support in the workplace.

Assessment: The course includes both theoretical and practical assessments to ensure participants have fully understood and can apply their learning:

  • Written Exam: A short multiple-choice exam covering key concepts of first aid, emergency procedures, and workplace safety.
  • Practical Assessment: Participants must demonstrate their ability to apply first aid techniques in a variety of emergency scenarios, such as performing CPR, controlling bleeding, and managing fractures. This hands-on assessment ensures that participants can perform first aid effectively in real-life situations.

Validity: The First Aid at Work certification is valid for 3 years. To remain compliant with the latest health and safety regulations, participants are required to complete a First Aid at Work Requalification Course before the expiry of their certification.
